MacAfee Site Advisor is an extension that integrates into Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer to help you have a safer navigation through the Web. It works by connecting to a free online safety service that regularly scans web sites to check their reliability by testing them for multiple types of threats. As a result, web sites are labelled according to their security levels, which this extension uses to alert you about potentially dangerous sites.
The program is very easy to use. An intuitive interface allows you to configure various settings. For example, you can create your personal list of trusted sites. Similarly, you can start the protected mode and set a password to protect you from visiting risky websites. Finally, you can also set the protection level for your downloads. It scans files and stops downloading when a specific file is found to be dangerous. Regarding your browser, a new toolbar will be installed, from which you can start secure searches or access the program's settings. As a result, color-code or highlighted site ratings will appear next to the links when you are navigating the web.
In general, MacAfee Site Advisor relies on highly reputed AV services, which are often used, together with Google Safe Browsing, to evaluate a site’s safety. Unfortunately, such popular web browsers as Google Chrome, Opera and Safari are not supported.
